Timeline

The story of Thomas Malthus, told in moments.

Legacy

The "Malthusian trap" became shorthand for the fear that humanity can't outgrow its appetites. Critics called him heartless. The Green Revolution proved him wrong on food production. Population growth proved him right about pressure.

1766 Birth

Born near Guildford, Surrey. His father Daniel was a personal friend of David Hume and a fan of Rousseau. Educated at home, then Cambridge, where he studied mathematics and won prizes in Latin and English declamation.

1798 Event

Published An Essay on the Principle of Population, arguing that population growth would always outstrip food supply. The math was brutal: people multiply geometrically, food arithmetically. Famine, war, and disease were nature's check.

1805 Life

Became Britain's first professor of political economy, at the East India Company College in Haileybury. An Anglican cleric, he saw poverty not as solvable but as divinely ordained discipline.

In Their Own Words (20)

The science of political economy is essentially practical, and applicable to the common business of human life. There are few branches of human knowledge where false views may do more harm, or just views more good.

Book I, Introduction, p. 9, 1836

Not many years had elapsed after the first edition of this work, when it became known to all with whom Mr. Malthus had the opportunity of communicating on the subject, or who were acquainted with his last publications, that his opinions on the subject of value had undergone some change.

Advertisement to the Second Edition, p. vii, 1836

The first business of philosophy is to account for things as they are; and till our theories will do this, they ought not to be the ground of any practical conclusion.

Book I, Introduction, p. 8, 1836

To minds of a certain cast there is nothing so captivating as simplification and generalization.

Book I, Introduction, p. 5, 1836

But such consumption is not consistent with the actual habits of the generality of capitalists. The great object of their lives is to save a fortune, both because it is their duty to make a provision for their families, and because they cannot spend an income with so much comfort to themselves, while they are obliged perhaps to attend a counting house for seven or eight hours a day......There must therefore be a considerable class of persons who have both the will and power to consume more material wealth than they produce, or the mercantile classes could not continue profitably to produce so much more than they consume.

Book II, Chapter I, On the Progress of Wealth, Section IX, p. 400 (See also: David Ricardo and aggregate demand), 1836
