Timeline

The story of Atahualpa, told in moments.

1502 Birth

Born around 1502, son of the Inca emperor Huayna Capac. Raised in Quito in the northern part of the empire. His father and the designated heir both died of smallpox around 1525, likely from a disease that arrived with Spanish ships before any Spaniard reached the Inca heartland.

1532 Event

Won a civil war against his half-brother Huascar and became the last Inca emperor. The war had killed hundreds of thousands. His army was still celebrating when the Spanish arrived.

1532 Event

Captured by Francisco Pizarro at Cajamarca. Pizarro had 168 soldiers. Atahualpa had an army of 80,000 but came to the meeting unarmed. The Spanish killed between 2,000 and 6,000 of his attendants in less than an hour.

1533 Death

Executed by garrote in Cajamarca. He'd filled a room 22 feet long and 17 feet wide with gold as ransom. Pizarro took the gold and killed him anyway.
