Biography
Yasser Arafat, also popularly known by his kunya Abu Ammar, was a Palestinian political leader. He was chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) from 1969 to 2004, President of Palestine from 1989 to 2004 and President of the Palestinian Authority (PNA) from 1994 to 2004. Ideologically an Arab nationalist and a socialist, Arafat was a founding member of the Fatah political party, which he led from 1959 until 2004.

Co-founded Fatah, a Palestinian nationalist movement dedicated to armed struggle against Israel. Operated from Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, and Tunisia over the decades. The group carried out guerrilla attacks and, under factions, airplane hijackings and bombings.
Elected chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization at 40. Wore military fatigues and carried a holstered pistol everywhere, including to the UN General Assembly in 1974. "I have come bearing an olive branch and a freedom fighter's gun," he told them.
Shook hands with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on the White House lawn. The Oslo Accords recognized the PLO and created the Palestinian Authority. He shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with Rabin and Shimon Peres.
Died at a military hospital in Paris at 75. He'd been airlifted from his compound in Ramallah, which Israeli forces had besieged for over two years. The cause of death remains disputed. French investigations found abnormal polonium-210 levels on his belongings.
