Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., known professionally as Snoop Dogg, is an American rapper, singer, record producer, songwriter, and actor. Born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. in Long Beach, California. His mother nicknamed him "Snoopy" because he loved the Peanuts cartoon. Started rapping in sixth grade. Joined the Rollin' 20s Crips as a teenager and was arrested multiple times.
Released Doggystyle, his debut album produced by Dr. Dre. It debuted at number one with 806,000 copies sold in the first week. "Gin and Juice" and "What's My Name?" became West Coast anthems.
Acquitted of murder charges in the shooting death of Philip Woldemariam. His bodyguard had pulled the trigger. The trial lasted three months. Snoop left Death Row Records shortly after.
Performed at the Super Bowl halftime show alongside Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige. The NFL had long avoided hip-hop for halftime. Snoop took a knee during his performance.
