1912 Life

Moved to England at 38 after failing as a farmer in New Hampshire. Published his first collection, A Boy's Will, in London. He was unknown in America.

1915 Event

Returned to America. His second book, North of Boston, had made him famous back home while he was overseas. "Mending Wall" and "The Death of the Hired Man" were praised.

1924 Event

Won the first of four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry. No other poet has won it four times. "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" became one of the most-quoted poems in English.

1961 Event

Recited "The Gift Outright" at John F. Kennedy's inauguration. The sun was so bright he couldn't read his new poem. He recited from memory instead. He was 86.
