Biography

Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was a Colombian drug lord, narcoterrorist, and politician who was the founder and leader of the Medellín Cartel. Dubbed the "King of Cocaine", Escobar was one of the wealthiest conventional criminals in history, having amassed an estimated net worth of US$30 billion by his death, while his drug cartel monopolized the cocaine trade into the US in the 1980s and early 1990s.

1976 Event

Police find 39 kilos of cocaine in the spare tire of his car on a return trip from Ecuador. He bribes the second judge. The charges disappear. The arresting agent is murdered the following year. This becomes a pattern. He calls it plata o plomo. Silver or lead.

1982 Event

Elected to the Colombian Congress as an alternate member of the Liberal Party. Builds housing, parks, and football stadiums in Medellin's poorest neighborhoods. They call him Paisa Robin Hood. His cartel ships 70 to 80 tons of cocaine into the US every month.

1989 Event

Plants a bomb on Avianca Flight 203. He's trying to kill presidential candidate Cesar Gaviria. Gaviria isn't on the plane. All 107 passengers and crew die, including two Americans. The US government gets directly involved.

1991 Life

Surrenders to authorities on his terms. Serves his sentence in La Catedral, a "prison" he built himself. It has a football pitch, a Jacuzzi, a bar, and a waterfall. When the government tries to move him to a real jail in 1992, he escapes.

1993 Death

Killed on a rooftop in Medellin. One day after his 44th birthday. Colombian special forces trace his location from a phone call to his family, using American technology. A bullet strikes his head. Over 25,000 people attend his funeral. Some pray to him as a saint.

2007 Legacy

His private estate, Hacienda Napoles, is converted into a theme park with luxury hotels. The four hippos he kept in his private zoo have multiplied to over 100. They swim in Colombian rivers. The largest invasive species problem caused by a single drug lord.
