Biography

Martin Lee Gore is an English musician, singer, and songwriter. He is one of the founding members of the electronic music band Depeche Mode and is the band's main songwriter. He is the band's guitarist and keyboardist, and occasionally provides lead vocals. Gore possesses a tenor singing voice which contrasts with lead vocalist Dave Gahan's dramatic baritone. He is also known for his flamboyant and (sometimes) androgynous stage persona. Gore has also released several solo albums and collaborated with former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke as part of VCMG.

Timeline

The story of Martin Gore, told in moments.

1980 Event

Co-founded Depeche Mode in Basildon with Vince Clarke, Andy Fletcher, and Dave Gahan. Gore had taught himself keyboards by figuring out chart hits from the magazine Disco 45. He'd been playing guitar in a band called Norman and the Worms.

1986 Event

Wrote and performed on Black Celebration. By now he was the band's primary songwriter, having taken over after Clarke left in 1981. His songs explored sex, religion, solitude. He found happy songs fake.

1990 Event

Violator was released. "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence" became global hits. The album sold over 8 million copies. It turned a cult synth-pop group into stadium headliners.

2020 Event

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Depeche Mode. He received the Moog Innovation Award in 2019 for "contributions to the exploration of sound in popular music." After Andy Fletcher's death in 2022, Gore became the band's longest-serving member.
