Magda Goebbels

Born Johanna Maria Magdalena Behrend in Berlin. Her mother later married a Jewish businessman named Friedlander who gave Magda his name and paid for her boarding school education in Brussels.

Marries Joseph Goebbels. Hitler is the best man. She'd divorced her wealthy first husband to be with Goebbels. The Fuhrer calls her the ideal German woman. She's blonde, poised, and photographs well.

Becomes the unofficial first lady of the Third Reich. Hitler is unmarried, so Magda hosts state dinners and public events. She and Joseph have six children. She names them all with names beginning with H. Helga, Hildegard, Helmut, Holdine, Hedwig, Heidrun.

Moves into the Fuhrerbunker with all six children. Friends and family beg her to let the children go. Her sister-in-law offers to take them. She refuses. She writes to her son from her first marriage: 'The world that comes after the Fuhrer will not be worth living in.'

Poisons all six of her children with cyanide while they sleep, crushing capsules into their mouths. Helga, the eldest, is 12. Heidrun, the youngest, is four. Then she and Joseph walk into the Chancellery garden and take cyanide. She is 43.
