1958 Birth

Born Joan Marie Larkin in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. Got her first guitar at 14. The teacher tried folk songs. She wanted rock.

1975 Event

Co-founded the Runaways at 15. One of the first all-female rock bands. "Cherry Bomb" became their anthem. The industry didn't know what to do with teenage girls playing punk.

1981 Event

"I Love Rock 'n' Roll" hit number one and stayed there seven weeks. Twenty-three record labels had rejected her solo album. She'd pressed the first copies herself.
