Jair Messias Bolsonaro is a Brazilian politician and former military officer who served as the 38th president of Brazil from 2019 to 2023. He previously served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1991 to 2019.

1988 Event

Elected to Rio de Janeiro city council. Began a political career defined by provocative statements about minorities, women, and the military dictatorship. He served seven terms in Congress over 27 years.

2018 Event

Stabbed at a campaign rally in Juiz de Fora. The knife pierced his intestine. He nearly died. He campaigned from a hospital bed and won the presidency two months later.

2019 Event

Took office as president of Brazil. Amazon deforestation accelerated sharply. He dismissed climate scientists and fired the head of the space agency for publishing satellite data showing the destruction.

2023 Event

His supporters stormed Brazil's Congress, Supreme Court, and presidential palace. Bolsonaro was in Florida. He'd left the country two days before his term ended without attending the inauguration of his successor.
