Biography
Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus was Roman emperor from AD 14 until 37. He succeeded his stepfather Augustus, the first Roman emperor. Tiberius was born in Rome in 42 BC to politician Tiberius Claudius Nero and his wife, Livia Drusilla. In 38 BC, Livia divorced Nero and married Augustus. Following the untimely deaths of Augustus's two grandsons and adopted heirs, Gaius and Lucius Caesar, Tiberius was designated Augustus's successor. Prior to this, Tiberius had proved himself an able diplomat and one of the most successful Roman generals. His conquests of Pannonia, Dalmatia, Raetia, and (temporarily) parts of Germania laid the foundations for the empire's northern frontier.
Timeline
The story of Tiberius Claudius Nero Caesar, told in moments.
Born Tiberius Claudius Nero in Rome. His mother Livia divorced his father and married Octavian (the future Augustus) when Tiberius was three. He grew up in the household of Rome's first emperor but always felt like an outsider.
Conquered Pannonia and Dalmatia in brutal campaigns. His military record was impeccable. But Augustus kept passing him over as heir, preferring his grandsons Gaius and Lucius. Both died young.
Became emperor after Augustus's death, the designated heir by default. Already 55. Suspicious, withdrawn, and weary of politics. The Senate loathed him. He loathed them back.
Withdrew to Capri, leaving Rome's administration to Sejanus, his prefect. Ruled by letter for 11 years. Ancient sources claimed debauchery on the island, though how much is true and how much is hostile gossip remains debated.
Died at Misenum at 77. Some sources say he was smothered with a pillow by Caligula's ally Macro. Others say natural causes. Few mourned him. Caligula succeeded him immediately.
