The story of Philip II, told in moments.
Charles V abdicated. Philip inherited Spain, the Netherlands, southern Italy, and vast American colonies. He was 29 and already ruler of the largest empire in history.
His fleet won the Battle of Lepanto against the Ottoman Empire. The largest naval battle in Western history since antiquity. Over 200 Ottoman galleys were captured or sunk.
Launched the Spanish Armada against England. Storms and English fireships destroyed it. Philip reportedly said: "I sent my ships to fight against men, not God's winds and waves."
Died at the Escorial, the palace-monastery he'd built outside Madrid. He was 71. It took him 53 days to die. He refused to be moved from his bed. The sores on his body went untreated.
