Biography

Sir Michael Philip Jagger is an English musician, songwriter, and film producer. He is the lead singer and one of the founder members of the Rolling Stones. Jagger has co-written most of the band's songs with lead guitarist Keith Richards; their songwriting partnership is one of the most successful in rock music history. His career has spanned more than six decades, and he has been widely described as one of the most popular and influential front men in the history of rock music. His distinctive voice and energetic live performances, along with Richards's guitar style, have been the Rolling Stones' trademark throughout the band's career. Early in his career, Jagger gained notoriety for his romantic involvements and illicit drug use, and has often been portrayed as a countercultural figure.

I'm pleased that the Ministry of Culture is protecting the morals of the expat bankers and their girlfriends that are going to be coming.

Deriding the Chinese government's prohibition on the Rolling Stones playing four songs from their catalog. "Toned-down Rolling Stones rock China", CNN (April 8, 2006)., 2006

We have not had any disagreements about clothes, smoking or L'Wren, and this is all very hurtful for her... It is completely untrue to say that L'Wren has caused a rift between myself and the rest of the band. This is all nonsense, everyone has their own style.

Statement released in response to media reports of a rift in the band attributed to Jagger's new girlfriend at the time. "Jagger: No 'Yoko' girlfriend rift", CNN (October 5, 2005)., 2005

Childhood living is easy to do The things you wanted, I bought them for you Graceless lady, you know who I am You know I can't let you slide through my hands Wild horses couldn't drag me away Wild, wild horses, couldn't drag me away.

"Wild Horses (The Rolling Stones song)" (co-written with Keith Richards), on Sticky Fingers (1971)., 1971

I know I've dreamed you, a sin and a lie I have my freedom but I don't have much time Faith has been broken, tears must be cried Let's do some living, after we die Wild horses couldn't drag me away Wild, wild horses, we'll ride them some day…

"Wild Horses" (co-written with Keith Richards), on Sticky Fingers (1971)., 1971

I see a red door and I want it painted blackNo colors anymore, I want them to turn blackI see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothesI have to turn my head until my darkness goes I see a line of cars and they're all painted blackWith flowers and my love, both never to come backI see people turn their heads and quickly look awayLike a new born baby, it just happens every day I look inside myself and see my heart is blackI see my red door, I must have it painted blackMaybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the factsIt's not easy facing up, when your whole world is black
