Biography

Joseph Hubertus Pilates was a German physical trainer, writer, and inventor. He is credited with inventing and promoting the Pilates method of physical fitness. He patented a total of 26 apparatuses in his lifetime.

1914 Life

Interned as an enemy alien in England during WWI. Taught his exercises to fellow internees. Attached springs to hospital beds so bedridden patients could exercise. The Cadillac reformer was born in a prison camp.

1926 Event

Emigrated to New York. Opened a studio at 939 Eighth Avenue, in the same building as several dance rehearsal spaces. George Balanchine and Martha Graham sent their injured dancers to him.
