Biography

Gerald Norman Springer was a British and American broadcaster, journalist, actor, lawyer, and politician. He was best known for hosting the controversial tabloid talk show Jerry Springer from 1991 to 2018. Springer was noted as a pioneer in the emergence of "trash TV"; his eponymous show was a "commercial smash and certifiable cultural phenomenon" in the 1990s.

Won a seat on Cincinnati City Council at 27. Resigned in 1974 after admitting he'd paid a prostitute with a personal check. Won his seat back the next year. Became mayor in 1977.

1991 Event

Launched The Jerry Springer Show. Started as serious political talk. By the mid-90s it had pivoted to chair-throwing, bleeping, and tabloid chaos. Peak viewership: 6.7 million.
