Timeline
The story of Haile Selassie, told in moments.
Born Tafari Makonnen near Harar. His father was a cousin of Emperor Menelik II. He was a sickly child who survived malaria, typhus, and smallpox before his tenth birthday.
Crowned Emperor of Ethiopia with the title "King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah." The ceremony lasted three days. European royals attended.
Addressed the League of Nations after Italy invaded Ethiopia with poison gas. His speech warned that collective security had failed. The delegates hissed at the Italian journalists, not at the bombs.
Returned to Addis Ababa after five years in exile. British forces had driven out the Italians. He rode back into his capital on horseback.
Visited Jamaica. Rastafarians considered him the returned Messiah. 100,000 people met him at the airport. He never endorsed the religion built around him but never denied it either.
In Their Own Words (20)
Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted, the indifference of those who should have known better, the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most, that has made it possible for evil to triumph.
Speech to the UN Security Council in Africa Hall, Addis Ababa, 28 January 1972, Security Council official records, S/PV,1627. Multiple sources misattribute the quote to a separate speech Selassie made to the UN on 4 October 1963., 1972
We wish to recall here the spirit of tolerance shown by Our Lord Jesus Christ when He gave forgiveness to all including those that crucified Him.
Address to the World Evangelical Congress in Berlin (28 October 1966), 1966
In the history of the human race, those periods which later appeared as great have been the periods when the men and the women belonging to them had transcended the differences that divided them and had recognized in their membership in the human race a common bond.
Address at Haile Selassie I University (now Addis Ababa University) honoring Indian President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (13 October 1965), 1965
The United Nations continues to sense as the forum where nations whose interests clash may lay their cases before world opinion. It still provides the essential escape valve without which the slow build-up of pressures would have long since resulted in catastrophic explosion.
1963
Twenty-seven years ago, as Emperor of Ethiopia, I mounted the rostrum in Geneva, Switzerland, to address the League of Nations and to appeal for relief from the destruction which had been unleashed against my defenceless nation, by the Fascist invader.I spoke then both to and for the conscience of the world. My words went unheeded, but history testifies to the accuracy of the warning that I gave in 1936. Today, I stand before the world organization which has succeeded to the mantle discarded by its discredited predecessor. In this body is enshrined the principle of collective security which I unsuccessfully invoked at Geneva. Here, in this Assembly, reposes the best — perhaps the last — hope for the peaceful survival of mankind.
