1713 Birth

Born in Braunschweig, the eldest son of Ferdinand Albert II, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel.

1735 Event

Inherited the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel from his father. He had fought under Prince Eugene of Savoy against the Ottoman Empire before taking the throne.

1745 Event

Founded the Collegium Carolinum, now TU Braunschweig, on the advice of his court preacher. Hired Gotthold Ephraim Lessing as his librarian.

1776 Event

Signed a treaty with his cousin George III to supply 4,000 troops for service in the American Revolution. The Brunswick soldiers fought at Saratoga and were taken prisoner.
