Timeline
The story of Brian Wilson, told in moments.
Co-founded the Beach Boys with his brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Their early surf-rock sound was Brian's creation from the start.
Released Pet Sounds. He'd stopped touring to focus entirely on studio production. The album used session musicians, unconventional instruments, and harmonies that Paul McCartney called the greatest record ever made.
Abandoned the Smile sessions after a nervous breakdown. The album wouldn't be completed and released for 37 years. He spent much of the next two decades in bed, battling mental illness.
Finally released a completed version of Smile as a solo album. Critics gave it near-universal praise. Thirty-seven years between conception and completion.
Died at 82. He'd been placed under a conservatorship in 2024 due to a major neurocognitive disorder. His influence on studio production, vocal arrangement, and pop composition was without parallel.
