Union Wins Westport: Last Missouri Campaign Decided

Union cavalry and infantry under General Samuel Curtis routed Sterling Price's Confederate raiders at Westport near Kansas City in the largest Civil War battle west of the Mississippi. The defeat ended the last serious Confederate attempt to reclaim Missouri and sent Price's shattered army on a desperate retreat into Arkansas.
