Biography

Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri is a Mexican singer and record producer. Born in Puerto Rico to parents of Spanish and Italian descent, he is often referred to as "El Sol de México". Luis Miguel has sung in multiple genres and styles, including pop songs, ballads, boleros, tangos, jazz, big band, and mariachi. He is also recognized as the only Latin singer of his generation not to cross over to the Anglo market during the "Latin Explosion" in the 1990s.

1985 Event

Wins a Grammy at 14 for "Me Gustas Tal Como Eres," a duet with Sheena Easton. He's the youngest male Grammy winner at the time. Sings in both Spanish and English without accent in either.

1991 Life

Releases Romance, an album of bolero covers. His label says it's commercial suicide. No young pop star sings boleros. It sells over seven million copies worldwide and revives an entire genre. Two sequels follow.

1996 Life

His mother, Marcela Basteri, has been missing since 1986. Luis Miguel reportedly searches for years through private investigators. His father is suspected of involvement. He never speaks publicly about it. She's never found.

2018 Legacy

Netflix releases Luis Miguel: La Serie, a biographical show based on his life. He cooperates with production. It becomes Netflix's most-watched Spanish-language series at the time. A new generation discovers his music.
