Soviets Capture Vienna: Austria Falls to Red Army

Soviet tanks rolled into Vienna on March 30, 1945, and the city that had waltzed through centuries of empire became the final major European capital to fall in World War II. The Vienna Offensive, launched by forces of the Soviet 3rd Ukrainian Front under Marshal Fyodor Tolbukhin, encountered fierce resistance from Wehrmacht and SS units defending the Austrian capital in house-to-house fighting that lasted until April 13. Hitler had annexed Austria in the Anschluss of March 1938, and Vienna had served as a hub for Nazi administration and war production. The city's Jewish population, once numbering 185,000, had been almost entirely murdered or expelled. As Soviet forces approached from Hungary, the German garrison prepared defensive positions throughout the city, mining bridges and fortifying key buildings despite the hopelessness of the military situation. The fighting devastated Vienna's historic center. St. Stephen's Cathedral caught fire during the battle, and its roof collapsed. The State Opera House was heavily damaged by bombing. Soviet troops suffered approximately 38,000 casualties during the Vienna Offensive, while German losses were comparable. Civilian casualties were significant but poorly documented, as many Viennese had fled or been evacuated before the battle. Austria was divided into four occupation zones after the war, and Vienna, like Berlin, was split among the American, British, French, and Soviet powers. The occupation lasted until 1955, when the Austrian State Treaty restored sovereignty and established Austria as a permanently neutral nation. Vienna's reconstruction took decades, but the city's postwar identity as a neutral meeting ground between East and West became one of the Cold War's few diplomatic bright spots, hosting arms control talks and serving as the headquarters for several United Nations agencies.
