Hasdrubal Killed at Metaurus: Hannibal's Hope Destroyed

Hasdrubal Barca died at the Battle of the Metaurus after Roman forces intercepted his army crossing Italy to reinforce his brother Hannibal in the south. The Romans, led by consuls Gaius Claudius Nero and Marcus Livius Salinator, surprised Hasdrubal's force along the Metaurus River and destroyed it in a decisive engagement. The Romans severed Hasdrubal's head and catapulted it into Hannibal's camp as notification of the defeat. The loss of his brother's army ended Hannibal's last realistic hope of winning the Second Punic War on Italian soil.
