Vancouver Festival Tragedy: Car Ramming Kills 11
A vehicle rammed into crowds celebrating the Lapu-Lapu Day festival in Vancouver, killing 11 people and injuring at least 30 in one of Canada's deadliest mass-casualty attacks. The assault on a Filipino cultural celebration shocked the nation and intensified debates over public event security and vehicle-ramming prevention measures. The attack occurred on April 27, 2025, during festivities marking Lapu-Lapu Day, which commemorates the Filipino chieftain who defeated Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Vancouver's large Filipino community, one of the biggest in North America, had gathered for the annual celebration that included parades, cultural performances, and food vendors. The driver accelerated into the festival crowd at high speed before the vehicle was stopped by barriers and bystanders. First responders treated dozens of victims at the scene before hospital transfers overwhelmed Vancouver's emergency departments. The attack immediately raised questions about the security measures in place at public festivals, particularly regarding vehicle barriers and perimeter protection. Canadian authorities had studied vehicle-ramming attacks in Nice, Berlin, and Toronto but implementation of anti-vehicle measures at smaller community events remained inconsistent. The Toronto van attack of 2018, which killed 11 people on Yonge Street, had prompted increased security at major events but many community festivals continued to operate with minimal vehicular protection. The Vancouver attack renewed calls for federal funding to provide bollards and heavy barriers at all public gatherings above a certain attendance threshold.
