Gal Gadot Born: From IDF Soldier to Wonder Woman
Gal Gadot served two years in the Israel Defense Forces as a combat fitness instructor before winning the Miss Israel pageant in 2004 and launching an acting career that made her a global star. Born in Petah Tikva, Israel on April 30, 1985, she grew up in Rosh HaAyin, a city near Tel Aviv. Her mother was a teacher, her father an engineer. Military service is mandatory in Israel, and Gadot has spoken about how her time in the IDF shaped her discipline and physical confidence. She attended the IDC Herzliya to study law and international relations but left when acting opportunities began to arrive. Her early film career included small roles in Fast & Furious and its sequels, where she played Gisele Yashar, a character whose fighting scenes she performed largely herself. Director Zack Snyder cast her as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, a role that transformed her career overnight. Wonder Woman, released in 2017 and directed by Patty Jenkins, was the first female-led superhero film produced by a major studio in the modern era (after Catwoman and Elektra, which are not fondly remembered). It grossed over $822 million worldwide and was praised for presenting a female superhero with agency, strength, and complexity. Gadot performed many of her own stunts, including fight choreography that drew on her military training. The film's cultural impact extended beyond box office numbers. It demonstrated that audiences would support a female-led action franchise and accelerated Hollywood's belated investment in stories centered on women. The sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, was released during the COVID-19 pandemic and performed less strongly at the box office. Gadot has since appeared in Red Notice, Murder on the Orient Express, and other major productions. She has been a face of Revlon and Tiffany & Co., and her public profile has made her one of the most recognizable Israeli figures internationally. She has faced criticism for her public statements supporting IDF operations, particularly during the 2014 and 2021 Gaza conflicts.
